This slide of human pars distalis is a higher
magnification of the previous slide. Note again the erythrocyte-
filled sinusoids. Recall the hypothalamic-hypophyseal portal system
and its importance in the regulation of anterior pituitary control
and function. The acidophils stain a yellow-orange with Orange G
while the basophils stain a purple color in this slide. Recall that
prolactin and growth hormone are secreted by the acidophilic cell
population and that thyrotrophin and the 2 gonadotrophins FSH and LH
are elaborated by the basophils. The cells which fail to pick up
the stain are called chromophobes. What do these cells represent?
