| Next Meetings DC Area Health Sciences Libraries (DCAHSL) DC Area Health Sciences Libraries will meet on June 24th from 12:30 - 5 PM for Andrew Youngkin’s presentation on “Geeks Bearing Gifts: Unwrapping New Technology Trends.” Andrew will present from 12:30 - 4:30 PM followed by an optional tour of The Department of Veterans Affairs Central Office Library from 4:30 - 5:00 PM. The Department of Veterans Affairs is at 810 Vermont Ave., NW-- conveniently located near Metro’s Blue Line (McPherson Square stop/take Vermont Ave./White House exit) or Red Line (Farragut North stop/take K St./Farragut Square exit). AGENDA 2:00 3:00 BIG DATA Speaker: Matthew Clark, Director, Professional Services at BioFortis Topic: Qiagram: A Novel Interface for Scientists to Mine and Understand Large Datasets with Natural-Language Queries Dr. Clark recently presented this topic at the NIAID sponsored BIOINFORMATICS FESTIVAL entitled Data Science: Unlocking the Power of Big Data. Matthew Clark is Director of Professional Services at BioFortis, providing informatics tools for next-generation biobanking and for data exploration. In this role he works closely with pharmaceutical, academic, and hospital researchers to track, mine, and understand their data. He has published broadly in the areas of data mining for patient safety in drug development, quantitative structure-activity relationships, simulations of the thermodynamics of ligand-protein binding, bibliometrics, and the physics of mechanical watches. Matt has experience in bioinformatics, as a former Director of Informatics at Locus Pharmaceuticals, and Director of New Product Development at the Institute for Scientific Information. 3:00 4:00 BIBLIOMETRICS Speaker: James King, Information Architect, NIH Library, National Institutes of Health Topic: Impact and Productivity Measurements in Changing Research Environments Last year, Mr. King co-presented this topic http://www.infotoday.com/cil2012/session.asp?ID=D205 at the Computers in Libraries Conference. He blends his IT background with librarianship to create innovative new workflows andservices to better meet the changing needs of the library's clients. At NIH, as Information Architect he has served as an internal consultant for the library's informationists program, creating unique technology solutions to support collaboration, systematic reviews, and research portfolio management using a variety of tools including Drupal. Previously, his efforts transformed the Naval Research Laboratory's library from a print-based traditional library to a cutting-edge digital library. James speaks regularly on the future impact/opportunities of technology, on the role of libraries in researcher metrics, and recent keynote addresses to government librarians on the role of innovation in creating a new future in government libraries. Whether communicating your value to a VIP or just trying to stay in touch with your multi-generational staff, speaking across cultures, generations and technology platforms while still adhering to the strategic goals of your library and parent organization, can be formidable. This workshop will present a variety of different communication challenges (either generational, intercultural or via technology) and will look at methods to strategically navigate them to get your message across.
