WHO NEEDS TO TAKE THIS TEST

All students planning to enroll in Spanish courses who have not taken Spanish at Georgetown before.

OBJECTIVES

The Spanish Placement Test simply determines the appropriate class where you should register upon entry into our curriculum. It has been designed to reflect the objectives of the different levels of the Spanish language curriculum in the areas of listening, reading, vocabulary, and grammar. Since the items are reflective of different levels, do not be alarmed if you encounter items unknown to you or if you are unable to complete a section(s). Your overall performance will be indicative of the level at which you will be placed. This test cannot be used to confirm AP credit, to obtain a Native Speaker certificate, or to place out of any language requirement. For any of these purposes you need to take the Validation Test which is offered at the beginning of the fall semester during New Student Orientation.

SECTIONS

The Spanish Placement Test is divided into four sections:

Section I: listening comprehension (10 min)
Section II: vocabulary (10 min)
Section III: grammar (30 min)
Section IV: written comprehension (40 min)

THE HONOR CODE PLEDGE

Please be aware that you are bound to the Honor Code Pledge. We recommend that you visit the pages of the University Honor Code Council . We are perfectly aware of the implications of putting a test on the web. However, we trust that you will start from day one to respect your pledge. Since this test is only for placement purposes, it would be inappropriate to use any kind of help or reference to complete it. As you know, cheating is only going to misplace you in the language curriculum. If there is a serious mismatch between your results on the Spanish Placement Test and your subsequent performance at the placement level, you may be required to take an additional test. If it is determined that you cheated, your case will be submitted to the Honor Code Council.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS.
HARDWARE: Any computer connected to the internet with headphones, or speakers connected to a sound card.

SOFTWARE: Although it may funtion well on other browsers and platoforms the placement works best on the latest version of Mozilla or Netscape on a PC. This placement uses pop-up windows. Mozilla/Netscape has a built-in option for blocking pop-ups. Click on Edit, Preferences. Under Privacy & Security select Popup windows. Make sure the box next to "Block unrequested popup windows" is unchecked. From the Navigator status bar you can also allow pop-ups for a site by clicking on Tools, Popup Manager and selecting "Allow popups from this site". Finally, under Tools, Popup Manager, Manage popups you can remove any sites that have been "allowed" or add sites that are allowed to present pop-ups. For Internet Explorer go to Tools >> Pop-up blocker. For Opera choose File >> Quick preferences. If your home computer does not meet the hardware requirements try on another computer (go to a cybercafe, a computer lab, library, etc. near to your house).

LISTENING.

For the Listening Comprehension section, it is very important to determine that your computer is able to play sounds from the Internet. If you have heard sounds previously from your computer while surfing the net, you should not have any problem. Just in case, though, we recommend that you click here to check that your sound settings are correct and your browser is Java enabled.
If you have a provisional placement result (because you skipped the listening section in a previous session) and want to do the listening now, click below the start arrow to go to the next page and make sure that you select yes to the question "Are you coming back for the listening only?." That way you will do only the listening section. When you finish, you will receive the final score combining your results from all sections of the placement test (not only from the listening).

TEST RESULTS.

The system keeps track of your answers and automatically calculates your score. At the end of the test you will get a page with the results. It is advisable that you print this page and keep it for your records. When you take the test during  summer, as part of pre-registration, the results are sent to the Dean of your school.  If you re-enter the test at anytime after completing it you will go directly to the results page. If for any reason you need to retake the test contact the Spanish Department.

IN CASE OF PROBLEMS

If something goes wrong during the test just re-enter it and the system should take you back to the last page you submitted. Keep in mind that most of the problems tend to be due to overloading of the net. It is advisable that you try to do the test (especially the listening section) at a time when Internet traffic is likely to be low. If after returning to the test you still have problems contact the Spanish Department.

.

If you have checked the hardware and software requirements and read all the previous information, you can now begin the Spanish Placement Test. Time starts counting from the moment you submit your personal information. ¡Buena suerte!
