About This Edition of The House of Fame
This electronic edition was prepared and marked up in HTML by Walter Stewart
from The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, 2nd ed., ed. F. N. Robinson.
The e-text file was checked by comparing two electronic source files, a
typed version and an OCR scanned version without line numbers. The two
versions were carefully corrected by hand, then compared with the Unix
diff program. The diff program found about 100-200 differences between
the files, representing a mistake in one of them. Roughly 80% of the errors
were spelling errors in the typed version (i for y, for example); the OCR
version was the more accurate. Corrections were then made carefully by
reference to Robinson edition. Line numbering was added by a program Walter
Stewart wrote that counted every five lines, added markup for spaces, and
then inserted the appropriate line number from the counter. Lineation was
checked against the Robinson edition for final accuracy.
