National French Honor Society

History

Pi Delta Phi wasfounded as a departmental honor society at the University of California,Berkeley, in 1906. After twenty years as a local chapter, Pi Delta Phideclared itself the National French Honor Society and chartered the BetaChapter at the University of Southern California in 1925.

The Society expanded slowly duringthe next fifteen years. Since the end of World War II, Pi Delta Phi hasenjoyed phenomenal growth. At the present time, it numbers more than 275chapters established at representative public and private colleges anduniversities in almost every state, as well as chapters in Paris and Aix-en-Provence.

The Society was admitted to membershipin the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967.

The Theta Chi chapter of Pi DeltaPhi was established at Georgetown by Prof. J. M. Guieu  in 1977.

Purpose

The purpose of this Society shallbe (1) to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French languages andits literatures; (2) to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americansfor the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world; (3) to stimulateand encourage French cultural activities.

Membership

To qualify a student must have takenat least one course above the Advanced II or Topics for Oral Proficiency level, have a 3.2 overall GPA,and a 3.5 in the French courses taken at Georgetown. To become a memberplease complete thisform, providing your present and permanentaddresses, school, graduation date, and phone number. Also provide a copy of an official transcript showing your GPA. The application fee is$30(money orders only) to be given to the French Department Administrator in 416 ICC. Money orders should be made to the order of "Georgetown University".
