Unit 4 Section 3Exercise 10 AnxietyNewell's music

Anxiety disorders run the gamut from highly specific phobias (i.e. “linonophobia” or the fear of string) to a chronic, pressing feeling of impending doom (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). This section begins with two musical pieces will provide a more subjective insight into how anxiety impacts the individual in two particular disorder subtypes.  Next, paintings are used to represent the immediacy and terror of phobia. Finally, through a brief examination of literary selections, students should gain an understanding of the different forms this condition assumes.

We begin with two short musical compositions by Glenn Newell. Dr. Newell (short bio here).

Listen to the following composition and answer the study questions.

“Courageous Cat.”

In Dr. Newell’s own words, the “Courageous Cat” theme really does portray the tension and anxiety of the ‘Spy versus Spy’ setting”.  In contrast to the intermittent nature of the next song, tension and anxiety appears to keep building throughout the entire song – indicating some sort of unknown, persistent danger.  What type of anxiety disorder does this selection best represent?
