I told Dr. S: "The elevator doors close right in front of me as though they were the world shutting me out. I want to pound against them when I see the numbers light up one by one on the lintel, marking floors that aren't mine. My co-workers hurry by me. Don't they see? I must be invisible, like someone pulling up his collar in the heavy rain."
"To me you are visible." I looked into Dr. S's eyes and thought of elves. His eyebrows arched and the corners of his lids slanted slightly. The room darkened and I saw only those eyes.
