"Woodstock Reflections"
- Sister Metti Amirtham, SCC, on "A Theology of Space and the Female Body" (Episode #4, 11/19/09)
Audio Version | Video Version
Sr. Metti Amirthdam, SCC, Ph.D., a Woodstock International Visiting Fellow from India, discusses her project on developing a "theology of space", in relation to the female body. Sister Metti has found that cultural norms in India help define those geographical and physical spaces that it is considered "appropriate" for a woman to occupy. These norms tend to restrict women to private, domestic spheres, which do not allow for full involvement in Church activities. Sister Metti hopes that her theology of space, discussed here, will empower women to take a more active role in the world.
- Father Daniel Madigan, S.J., on "The Moral Low Ground in Muslim-Christian Relations" (Episode #3, 11/5/09)
Audio Version | Video Version
Father Daniel Madigan, S.J., a Woodstock Senior Fellow and internationally-renowned expert on Interreligious Dialogue, challenges the notion that Muslims and Christians who try to move closer to one another in dialogue must necessarily lose their own identity. He urges "a dialogue in which we have the courage to admit to ourselves and to one another precisely what we have done and what we are doing: instead of simply dialoguing about the ideals that we share (or the 'triumphs' we have notched up over the centuries), we should actually take the next step -- a rather vulnerable step -- and allow ourselves to speak of and to reflect on our failures to live up to the ideals."
- Father Ray Kemp and "Faith in the City" (Episode #2, 10/22/09)
Audio Version | Video Version
Father Raymond Kemp, Woodstock Senior Fellow and director of the Center's "Faith in the City" project, is interviewed about the origins and purpose of that program, including its relationship to his longstanding engagement with urban issues in Washington, DC. He also discusses his commitment to helping young people think about difficult urban issues from a faith perspective, as the teacher of two popular courses in Georgetown University's Theology Department, "The Church and the Poor" and "Struggle and Transcendence".
- Why Religious Voices Should Enter the Health Care Debate (Episode #1, 10/8/09)
Audio Version | Video Version
Dr. Edmund Pellegrino, former chairman of the President's Council on Bioethics and Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Georgetown University Medical Center's Center for Clinical Bioethics, speaks on the need for religious voices to enter the ongoing debate on health care reform. The podcast is an edited version of the presentation that he gave at the April 2008 Woodstock Forum on "Values Inside the Issues: Religious Voices on Health Care".
