AFRICA ON-LINE
CIED has completed a comprehensive assessment of the computer needs of St. Augustine University in Mwanza, Tanzania and delivered and installed 50 computers donated by Georgetown University. This project has served as a blueprint to upgrade the computer systems in conjunction with the communication center. Program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
AFRICAN LEADERS PROGRAM (AL)
In conjunction with the Africa-America Institute, CIED designed workshops to enhance leadership skills of young leaders from Africa. The program focused on innovative models of community development and civic participation.
ANTICORRUPTION PUBLIC POLICY CENTER – PARAGUAY
CIED provided technical expertise to the Catholic University of Paraguay to establish a center charged with playing a role in addressing issues of anticorruption and transparency. This included forming a governing board, developing policies, procedures and a work plan for the Center.
ANTICORRUPTION “TRAIN THE TRAINER” PROGRAM – PANAMA
CIED conducted a two part project sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Panama. The first part covered anticorruption-related topics such as ethics, accountability, governance and e-government. The second part covered train-the-trainer methodologies and strategies, adjusted to the needs of the Republic of Panama. U.S. Department of State.
APPLIED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
This innovative CIED distance education project has provided mid-level managers with skills in total quality management and problem-solving for business. After mastering the technical material, CIED provided technical assistance aimed at solving real life problems in businesses. The Tecnologico de Monterrey is currently offering this program on-line through their virtual university. Program funded by USAID.
BELIZE LEADERSHIP FOLLOW-ON PROGRAM
To support stability and economic growth in Belize, CIED has designed a program of leadership development, civic participation, and professional counseling for recipients of U.S. government scholarships. Program funded by USAID.
BURMA AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
CIED designed and implemented a program to train Burmese farmers in Agriculture and Rural Leadership at the Xavier University of Agriculture in the Philippines. This program has worked with grass roots leaders in Burma making a contribution to community development in the country.
CENTRAL AMERICAN MAYORS EXCHANGE
This CIED program has strengthened a cadre of municipal leaders from Honduras and Nicaragua by enhancing their skills and presenting strategies to promote the development of local government services. Project activities explored issues of governance, fiscal management, anticorruption, strategic planning, civic participation and leadership. Participants returned home with a civic action plan to improve local government. Program funded by the U.S. Department of State.
CENTRAL AMERICA PEACE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - PANAMA
The Central America Peace Scholarship Program/Panama has increased the number of future leaders in Panama by fostering democratic values, leadership skills, and university education to impact the social and economic development of the country. Program funded by USAID.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS PROGRAM – UKRAINE
CIED developed and conducted, in cooperation with World Learning, a three-week exchange program for senior staff of the Ukrainian parliament that offered the opportunity for skill enhancement and first-hand experience of the American political, social and cultural realities. Program funded by USAID.
COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION OF STATES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS (CASS)
The CASS Program has offered technical education and leadership development to young adults and community leaders from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. This on-going program has given disadvantaged people the necessary knowledge and skills to build professional careers and secure the futures of their nations. This project was refunded in 2009 for a five year period under the name Scholarships for Education and Economic Development (SEED). Program funded by USAID.
DR-CAFTA
CIED and the Office for Foreign Commerce of the Dominican Republic offered a five-session video conference course on export alternatives for medium and large fresh produce companies. This workshop provided DR producers, exporters and government personnel, with practical information and alternatives to facilitate exports within the newly implemented DR-CAFTA agreement. The five-session course covered topics such as marketing, distribution chains, DR-CAFTA legal requirements, US agencies requirements and customs regulations. Program funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.
EAST CENTRAL EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ECESP)
For nearly 20 years, the ECESP Program has helped emerging democracies of Eastern Europe to transform and restructure their post-communist societies. ECESP has educated several top leaders from Albania, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland and Slovakia, to manage change in the public, private, and third sectors. Program funded by USAID.
EAST TIMOR PARTNERSHIP FOR INSTITUTIONAL EXCELLENCE
CIED pioneered a program for institutional development at UNTIM, East Timor’s only university. The project included improving the biology and animal husbandry departments, upgrading English programs and providing management training to university administrators. Program funded by USAID.
FUTURE LEADER EXCHANGE PROGRAM (FLEX)
CIED has designed reentry workshops for young leaders with disabilities from Russia and the Newly Independent States. The program has provided the students with leadership skills to increase opportunities for education, employment and social acceptance of disabled people in their home countries. Program funded by the U. S. Department of State.
GEORGETOWN BUSINESS TRAINING - CAMBODIA, LAOS, VIETNAM
CIED has developed business-training programs for entrepreneurs in Southeast Asia. In addition, CIED has built relationships with universities in Cambodia and Vietnam to help these institutions develop and implement new curricula to include principles of free market economies and rule of law. Program funded by USAID.
HEMISPHERIC MIGRATION PROJECT (HMP)
The Hemispheric Migration Project has provided resources and research to scholars and policy makers studying migration in the Americas. Works have focused on diverse subjects such as the drug trade and violence in Colombia and the effects of migration on small-scale agriculture in Jamaica. The most recent project focused on a demographic study of immigrants from Spain living and working in the United States.
INPRODES – URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
This program, developed in conjunction with INPRODES in Mexico, has provided training to Mexican municipal officials in the area of quality and local sustainability. A series of courses on urban planning and management aimed to improve municipal government operations in Mexico.
INTERNATIONAL NARCOTICS AND LAW (INL) FELLOW PROGRAM
The International Narcotics and Law (INL) Fellow Program promoted English language training in an effort to foster mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. By focusing on training law enforcement officers, the INL Fellow Program paired educators with law enforcement agencies around the world to extend cooperation on international issues.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE PROGRAMS - CHINA AND VIETNAM
CIED has designed and delivered international trade programs for foreign business leaders and government officials. Training has focused on business practices, quality control, labeling, taxation and legal issues related to conducting international trade with the United States. Networking meetings and site visits were incorporated as an integral part of all programs.
JESUIT SERVICE - CAMBODIA
CIED has worked with the Sign of the Dove to provide skills and hope to hundreds of adults disabled by land mines, war, and illness. Participants learned trades and received business training which allows them to produce quality goods and generate income.
KOSOVO MAYORS AND LOCAL LEADERS EXCHANGE
This exchange program provided training to Albanian and Serbian mayors from Kosovo in the area of strengthening local government. The program provided skills enhancement, courses and workshops at Georgetown University and Iowa Eastern Community College District. The program has also included in-country conferences and consultancies to reinforce U.S. training. Participants returned home with a civic action plan to improve local government. Program funded by the U. S. Department of State.
LEADERSHIP AND U.S. GOVERNMENT
Students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have participated in programs that explored issues of leadership and democracy in the United States. The programs were part of CUHK’s Leadership Development Program in Hong Kong, which aims at nurturing students’ leadership by preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the global community. Program funded by partner organization from overseas.
LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR IMPORT/EXPORT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE U.S. VIETNAM BILATERAL TRADE AGREEMENT
This training program has supported the implementation of the bilateral trade agreement between the United States and Vietnam. CIED has trained Vietnamese importers, exporters, business lawyers, and government officials in the legal framework of international trade and for the U.S. – Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement. CIED has also helped develop an alumni organization to promote networking and information exchange. Program funded by the U. S. Department of State.
NEAR EAST AND SOUTH ASIA EXCHANGE PROGRAM (NESA)
NESA program provided full scholarships for outstanding students from the Near East and South Asia for one semester or one academic year of non-degree undergraduate study at accredited two and four-year institutions in the U.S. The goal of the program aimed at increasing the mutual understanding between young emerging leaders from the Near East and South Asia and the U.S. by providing meaningful academic and cultural experiences at U.S. academic institutions. NICARAGUA PEACE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NPSP)
During the 10 years of civil conflict in Nicaragua, few young people had the chance to attend grade school and only a small percentage finished high school. The NPSP Program has provided talented Nicaraguans high school drop-outs with technical skills, leadership training, and a General Equivalency high school diploma. Program funded by USAID.
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TRAINING - HONDURAS
CIED has developed training programs to give community leaders skills in consensus building, strategic planning, and project formulation. Participants have developed projects to improve rural infrastructure, provide economic opportunities to women, and protect the environment.
RURAL MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY
CIED participated in a research consortium to develop a comparative framework for understanding rural microfinance institutions in developing countries. This Ford Foundation grant produced case studies and articles to support further research/training in the microfinance field.
SAFE CITIES PROGRAM - COLOMBIA
In conjunction with the International Organization for Migration, CIED has provided technical assistance to governors and mayors for implementing local policies to strengthen security and foster economic development in regions of Colombia with high numbers of ex-combatants. Program funded by USAID.
SHAREHOLDER AWARENESS, PROTECTION - MACEDONIA
In conjunction with the William Davidson Institute (University of Michigan Business School), CIED has designed and delivered training to build Macedonia’s capacity to educate citizens about shareholder rights and responsibilities under commercial law. Capital market and securities professionals developed skills to increase their interaction with the public and stakeholders in the legislative securities’ market reform process. STRENGTHENING DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS - HONDURAS
Through the Strengthening Democratic Institutions project, CIED has addressed critical issues of modernization and reform in the judicial, legislative, and electoral sectors of Honduras. This project has helped create a public defender system, strengthen an experimental Justice of the Peace program and provided infrastructure and training to automate courts and the legislature. Program funded by USAID.
TRANSITIONAL ENTERPRISES/EASTERN CARIBBEAN
This project was designed to work with Caribbean micro-entrepreneurs to study the effects of globalization on business in the region. It also has developed information technology alliances between suitable partners in the Caribbean and the United States, focusing especially on the development of e-commerce. Program funded by the U. S. Department of State.
TAJIKISTAN DIPLOMATIC TRAINING
This intensive training program was designed to strengthen the professional capabilities of junior and experienced Tajik diplomats to effectively direct the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tajikistan and represent the country abroad. CIED, in conjunction with Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service has assembled a team of experts to equip Tajik diplomats with new skills and strategies to support their effort of diplomacy and international relations. VIETNAM RADIO/TV BUSINESS PROGRAM
CIED has designed and produced talk radio and TV programs, aired twice a week, on The People’s Voice of HCM City and TV channels 7 and 9. These programs discuss issues related to business and market economy that support the transition of Vietnam towards a market-oriented economy by encouraging and strengthening small businesses. Program funded by the National Endowment for Democracy.
