Requirements
The CDACS concentration is available within any of the four fields of study in the Government Ph.D. program.
Coursework:
Five courses focused on relations between democratic governance and third/sector/civil society topics, distributed among existing requirements as follows:
| |
· Three courses comprising a Democracy and Third Sector minor, one of which is the gateway course for the concentration, GOVT 5** Introduction to Third Sector Studies. The purpose of the minor is to provide grounding in third sector/civil society studies. |
| |
|
| |
· One course within the political theory component of the Theory and Methods minor focusing on Democracy and the Third Sector/Civil Society topics. The purpose of the political theory requirement is to relate third sector/civil society topics to contemporary democratic and/or social theory. |
| |
|
| |
· One course within the major area that focuses on Democracy and Third Sector related topics. The purpose of the major area requirement is to relate democracy and the third sector studies to a region or problem-specific topic within political science. |
NB: These course requirements do not add new course requirements to the Ph.D., since the CDACS minor would be taken in place of another minor area. The other two course requirements double count toward existing major area and theory/method requirements.
The CDACS program of study is to be approved by the student's advisor/mentor, the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Director of CDACS.
Dissertation:
A dissertation focused on Democracy and the Third Sector topics (see CDACS Intellectual Focus Statement for examples).

The following courses are only indicative. The actual program of study is to be decided in consultation with the student's advisor/mentor, the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Director of CDACS.
