CID Report

This report, entitled "American Civic Engagement in Comparative Perspective," introduces the comparative findings from the U.S. "Citizenship, Involvement, Democracy" (CID) survey.

The report focuses on six themes:  1) trust; 2) civic participation; 3) religious involvement; 4) support for immigration and diversity; 5) political values; and 6) uses of modern media.  The results, which are presented in the form of colorful maps, show that while American civic engagement may no longer be as "exceptional" as in earlier time periods, the U.S. still remains firmly within the range of advanced democracies.  And on some of the other measures, Americans stand out as being deeply religious, much more supportive of immigrants and cultural diversity than citizens of other countries, and highly connected to television and the internet.

Overall, in addition to highlighting some of the pronounced differences among the European countries, the report shows how a comparative perspective enhances our understanding of the different facets of American civic engagement.
