Basic Life/
Basic AD&D

  • Georgetown University provides you with basic life insurance of $20,000 through MetLife.
  • Basic accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance of $20,000 is also provided. This benefit is payable in the event of your death as a result of an accident, or if you suffer a significant loss such as loss of sight or dismemberment as a result of an accident.
Supplemental Life
  • Employees - Choose from 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 times annual salary, up to $1,000,000.   The employee pays the full cost of this benefit.
Voluntary AD&D
  • Employee-only and family coverage available. You may purchase coverage from $10,000 to $1 million (in increments of $10,000). Complements your supplemental life coverage in the event of death due to accident or covered disabling injury.   The employee pays the full cost of this benefit.
  • Spouse - You may choose from the following coverage options: $10,000, $30,000, $50,000, $100,000, $150,000, $200,000, $250,000

    You must be enrolled in supplemental life to be eligible for spouse life coverage. Your spouse life election cannot exceed 50% of your supplemental life amount.
  • Children - $5,000 or $10,000
Business Travel Accident (BTA)
  • The University provides business travel accident insurance at no cost to you. BTA benefits are available for employees traveling more than 100 miles from their worksite, for up to 14 days, on University business. The maximum benefit payable is $750,000, subject to a $3.75 million maximum aggregate amount payable for any single accident. BTA is insured by The Hartford.

Automatic enrollment, provides income continuation (salary continuance) and income replacement (long term disability) in the event that employee cannot work due to non-work-related illness or injury.

  • Short Term Disability benefits replace 100% of your income in the event you become unable to work due to an injury, illness, or other medical scenario such as a scheduled surgery or birth of a child. Before you can begin realizing these benfefits, you must first satisfy a 15-day elimination period.
  • Long Term Disability benefits begin after you are unable to work, due to an illness or injury, for 90 calendar days and provides a benefit of 60% of base pay to a maximum paid benefit of $15,000 per month.
Retirement & Savings Benefits
  • Defined Contribution Retirement Plan:
    This is a retirement plan where contributions are made by the employee and the employer. The fund's value is based on the amount of contributions made and the return on investment.  As of January 2009, newly hired staff will be immediately eligible to participate in this plan.
  • Voluntary Contribution Retirement Plan: optional, a defined contribution plan, entirely funded by pre-tax employee contributions, supplements the DC Plan.
  • Georgetown University Retirement Plan(GURP): This is a defined benefit plan that provides participants a specific monthly benefit at retirement. Monthly benefits are calculated through a formula that considers both a participant's salary and years of service. A participant is not required to make contributions or investment decisions. This plan is not accepting new participants. Staff hired as of January 1, 2009, will be enrolled in the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan.

  • Long-term care insurance covers a range of personal care services you might need if you cannot care for yourself due to a temporary or permanent illness or injury. You can purchase individual policies through the Todd Benefits Group ("TBG"). These individual policies have special permanent group discounts when purchased by Georgetown University employees.
Tuition Assistance Program
  • Georgetown University offers tuition benefits to employees and their children through the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). These benefits can be used for both studies at Georgetown University and other accredited higher educational institutions. The benefit provided for studies at any institution other than Georgetown University is referred to as the "portable" benefit. These benefits can be used for both undergraduate and graduate studies.
 Other Benefits
  • Paid Leave: Full-time staff employees,
    Senior Level Executive and Senior Level Professional:  Accrue 21 days during first year; 22 days plus one additional day for each year of service thereafter, up to a maximum of 26 days.

    Full-time staff employees, Non-Senior Level Executive and Non-Senior Level Professional:  Accrue 16 days during first year; 17 days plus one additional day for each year of service thereafter, up to a maximum of 26 days.

  • Holidays: Georgetown faculty and staff are provided with 13 paid holidays.
  • Child Care: Hoya Kids Learning Center, an on-site facility, for children from 18 months old to 5 years old, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, fees vary according to income level, separate facility and policy at GU Law Center.
  • Faculty and Staff Assistance Program: assists faculty and staff and their families with professional and personal concerns, provided at no cost to employee, provides short term and crisis counseling, coordinates wellness programs, confidential.
  • Training and Development: provides individual classes as well as a Professional Management Certificate Program, available to all employees, paid for by the employees' departments.
  • Chaplain to the Staff: available for personal, professional, and spiritual development of staff, provided at no cost to staff member, private and confidential.
  • Parking/Transportation: on-campus and satellite options available, paid for by pre-tax payroll deduction, price varies according to income level and site, free shuttle service to Wisconsin Avenue, Dupont Circle, Arlington, and Law Center, free motorist assistance, pre-tax Metrocheck.
  • Credit Union: Hoya Federal Credit Union offers financial products and services to GU faculty, staff, and their families.
